01 · HISTORY

How this neighborhood remembers change

Joseon period

A settlement grows beyond Gwanghuimun

Roads, burial grounds, relief facilities, and folk-religious spaces shaped the area outside the southeastern city gate; shrine traditions are one source associated with the place name.

1950s

Tteokbokki becomes a neighborhood signature

Food stalls and specialist restaurants grew after the Korean War, forming the tteokbokki street now closely identified with Sindang-dong.

Today

Markets and making still share the alleys

Seoul Central Market, grain-trading memories, metal workshops, sewing rooms, and newer studios reveal several working histories at once.

02 · NEIGHBORHOOD VOICES

A neighborhood is also remembered by its people

Public records explain dates and places. Residents preserve the shops, school roads, sounds, and ordinary moments that maps cannot hold.
